Brita Somerkoski, Ed.D., M.Ed., Docent of Safety Pedagogy, originally graduated as a class teacher and completed her doctorate in 2008 on a topic related to school safety. She works as a Senior Researcher at the University of Turku and as Docent of Safety Pedagogy at the University of Eastern Finland. At the University of Turku’s Rauma campus, she has initiated several projects aimed at developing safety from early childhood education to higher education.
Brita’s interest in school safety began when she worked as a class teacher in a school undergoing renovation. She has also worked as a training planner at the Southwest Finland Rescue Department.
She is a member of the Finnish Non-fiction Writers’ Association and has edited, translated, and authored safety-related online materials, guides, textbooks, and scientific articles on topics such as structural fire safety, safe school days, safety content in curricula, learning games, safe early childhood environments, and the prevention of social exclusion.
The development of school safety culture is an ongoing process, as new times always bring new challenges. Safety management is a key part of school operations. Brita is an experienced and skilled trainer and lecturer in the field.
